Best drone for photo and video: honest picks (and the licence you'll need)

Image quality needs a bigger sensor and steady flight — and usually stricter rules too. Two of the three here are C1 or C2, so the A1/A3 certificate is required before the first flight; the Mini 5 Pro stays under 250 g and skips the exam. All three need registration at e.caa.gov.lv because they carry cameras.

  1. 1,063 gC2A1/A3 required; A2 certificate to fly closer to people

The best image quality of the three (C2). A larger sensor, wide dynamic range and long flights — this is the prosumer tier for serious photo and video work. Honest on the rules: C2 makes the A1/A3 certificate mandatory, and to fly closer to people in the A2 subcategory you additionally need the A2 certificate. The camera also means registration.

  2. 724 gC1A1/A3 certificate required

A very capable middle ground (C1). Two cameras, good wind resistance and long flights give you near-Mavic results for less money. C1 makes the A1/A3 certificate mandatory before the first flight, and the camera means registration. If you want serious quality without the C2 overhead, this is the logical pick.

  3. 249.9 gC0No A1/A3 exam required

Serious quality with no exam (249.9 g, C0). The 1-inch sensor delivers a clean image while the drone stays under 250 g and clear of the A1/A3 exam — a rare case where quality and lighter rules line up. The camera still means registration. Note: the bigger Plus battery pushes it over 250 g, and then the A1/A3 certificate becomes mandatory.

Frequently asked questions

+Which of the three gives the best image?

The Mavic 4 Pro leads on image quality (C2), the Air 3S is very close for less money (C1), and the Mini 5 Pro delivers a surprisingly clean image under 250 g (C0). The choice is often between quality and how many rules you are ready to take on.

+Which of them need the A1/A3 certificate?

The Mavic 4 Pro (C2) and Air 3S (C1) require the A1/A3 certificate before the first flight. The Mini 5 Pro is C0 and skips the exam. All three need operator registration at e.caa.gov.lv because they carry cameras.

+When do you also need the A2 certificate?

The A2 certificate is needed to fly closer to uninvolved people in the A2 subcategory, and it applies to heavier drones such as the Mavic 4 Pro (C2). For everyday use of the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S, A2 is not required.
