Can I fly a drone near power lines in Latvia?

Power lines are not just a background object for drone footage. They are civil engineering structures, can be hard to judge through a wide-angle camera, and create a serious consequence if the drone hits a wire or support.

The first check is still airspace. Open airspace.lv/drones for the exact location. If the route sits inside a UAS geographical zone, follow the zone conditions and file through UASIS when required.

CAA Latvia's local conditions say flights over civil engineering structures should be avoided where possible. A power line fits that risk logic. Do not fly along a line at low level, do not pass between wires and poles, and do not rely on obstacle sensors: thin wires are exactly the kind of object drones can miss.

If the purpose is a professional inspection, treat it as a different operation from casual Open-category filming. You may need site coordination, controlled ground area, additional permissions or a Specific-category approach, depending on the operation.

For normal filming, stay well clear, keep VLOS, choose a route with a large buffer, and use the Latvia location hub, can I fly here and courses before flying.

Frequently asked questions

+Is there one fixed drone distance from power lines?

The CAA materials used here do not publish one universal Open-category distance. The safe approach is to keep a large buffer and avoid planning close to wires.

+Can I film a power-line inspection?

A routine Open-category flight should not become a risky infrastructure operation. Professional inspection often needs separate planning and authorisations.
